Racing

Race Officers

Race Officers are in charge of racing on the water. See US Sailing's description of race officers.

  • Principal Race Official (PRO) operates from the signal boat and orchestrates the races.
  • Judges are responsible for conducting protest and redress hearings when competitors believe there has been a breach of the rules. See US Sailing's description of judges.
  • Umpires apply the rules of the sport to racing situations, primarily on-the-water as situations occur, to resolve rules issues. See US Sailing's description of umpires.

Fleets

One-design fleet

Through the years,  ODC has had various One Design Fleets including Sunfish, and Etchells. Currently, the club has a very competitive and  active Sunfish Fleet.

PHRF fleet

Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is a handicapping system used for yacht racing. ODC has both spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes, with each class divided into smaller divisions. The goal is to group boats so racers are competing against others with similar ratings. ODC also runs a separate pursuit series which serves as an "on-ramp" for beginning racers.

Radio-controlled Laser fleet

The radio-controlled Laser is a scale version of the famous one design Laser, the most popular "real boat" sailing class in the world. For more information see Radio Control.
